You might be going "Wait! Where's Day 8?"
It was one I wasn't looking forward to doing as it was about books I've read and I haven't read in a while. Besides it was Mother's Day so I have a valid reason for skipping it. Day Nine's Challenge is: "Your Feelings on Ageism" Ageism is stereotyping and discriminating against individuals or groups on the basis of their age Ageism is different from other "isms" as it's not constant like racism or ableism. No one can escape ageism, we all get old and can be prey to this discrimination. I don't think it's about the jesting of "You're over the hill", or teasing a friend who's lagging "C'mon Grandpa". Some people might disagree and say that's exactly it. I feel it's more towards treating our elders with disrespect, a condescending attitude and just think they're incompetent. Youth and even young adults forget that our elders survived WWII, the Great Depression, the Korean War, and Vietnam. Even those in our 40's and 50's have survived a lot more than today's kids: no car seats; no bicycle helmets; corporal punishment at home and at school; and if we got in trouble, it was our fault and our parents sided with the teachers or the law. We played on hot metal playgrounds, had BB guns, dared each other to ride our bikes down hills without brakes, and played Lawn Darts! If we didn't make a Sports team, that was okay, we learned to live with the disappointment. We didn't have video games, 200+ channels, or even Google! So all you youths needing "safe zones", constant praise and verification, and wanting free stuff - Suck it up Buttercups! Get your asses out there and work for it like we all have done! So what do I think of ageism? There'd be a lot less of it if today's youth learned respect, integrity, accountability, and the value of hard work.

Great point, we all forget those who went to war as soon as they turned 18 without the "luxury" we have today. Thank you for reminding me of this. I often shake my head at today's youth in comparison to when I was their age, but I often forget about those who went to war.

Ooooh, gerontology questions! Well, God has a great sense of humor. Ageism is just a theory yet accurately describing the roles we are playing according to our age. We can't quit playing, the roles we have created for us to understand each other, to know who is that person standing in front of us. What pisses you off in our generation and what you admire in previous is what the latter wanted for their self to have but could not effort it due to various reasons. Maybe the comfort they created is treated not like they expected. Yet, if you will look closer, those old generations are suffering from the comfort they have now. They just don't get used to this role of being relaxed, not worried about anything, staying calm. We have another thing to take care of, we don't need to jump with a parachutes or know how to break a bones of invaders, we need to know how to google it and write a good story, so some lazy young generation butt will get ready for the future we prepare for them) Learn how to do that with BreezeWriting. At your services, dear thinker!
